Rooney hat-trick keeps United in touch

A superb Wayne Rooney hat-trick helped Manchester United on their way to a 4-1 win away to rock bottom club Portsmouth.

Ryan Giggs scored the final goal with a superb free kick after laying on two of the assists for the England striker to show that he is still a game changing presence even at 35.

Even so, the victory, which kept United within five points of leaders Chelsea, did not come at ease as Portsmouth defied their league position by putting Sir Alex Ferguson’s team on the back foot in the early stages.

Ivory Coast striker Aruna Dindane missed three good chances whilst Jamie O’Hara forced a fine save from Tomasz Kuszczak. However, United showed their counter attacking quality with a fine move between Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney that eventually led to Michael Brown fouling the United striker in the penalty area. Rooney picked himself up and swiftly converted from the spot to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Portsmouth, under new manager Avram Grant, refused to give up and they were handed a route back into the match soon after. Nemanja Vidic was penalised for tugging Frederic Piquionne’s shirt in the box. Kevin Prince-Boateng, who missed a penalty last week, stepped up and converted the equaliser for Pompey.

Both teams went into the break fairly evenly matched. However, United raised their game significantly after the break. A Giggs curling free kick was met by Rooney who slotted past Begovic in the Portsmouth goal. The Welsh midfielder was then brought down in the box by Piquionne allowing Rooney to complete his hat-trick from the spot in the 54th minute.

Portsmouth attempted to battle back but the visitors proved too strong. Giggs completed the rout in the 87th minute with a stunning curled free kick to wrap up a fine 4-1 victory against a team that performed far above their league position.

Elsewhere, a Darren Gibson double helped a near fully changed United side beat Tottenham in the quarter finals of the League Cup.

Gibson was kept quiet by Besiktas in the 1-0 Champions League defeat last week. However, the young Irish midfielder struck two superb first half goals outside of the penalty area to defeat a near full strength Spurs outfit.

United lurking in wait for Chelsea slip up

A fine performance from Manchester United saw the reigning Premier League champions comfortably dispose out of form Everton 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Goals from Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia ensured that United stayed five points behind Chelsea after the league leaders thrashed Wolves 4-0 on the same day.

The match began with United searching for a way through the Everton defence. David Moyes’ team were going through an injury crisis and set up to frustrate the home side. It took a while but United eventually took the lead in the 35th minute with a sensational goal from Darren Fletcher. A bouncing ball on the edge of the box was expertly volleyed into the top corner by the Scottish midfielder to open the scoring for Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.

At half time, Everton brought on Yakubu to partner Louis Saha and the duo evidentally posed United more problems. Tim Cahill was sent through on goal but the alert Van Der Sar thwarted his close range effort.

Nevertheless, United ended their hopes in the 67th minue as a Ryan Giggs cross found Michael Carrick who sidefooted home from inside the penalty area. Valencia added a third not long after with a deflected effort that deceived Tim Howard ensuring that the game ended a comfortable 3-0 in United’s favour.

A couple of days later, a near fully changed United team hosted already eliminated Besiktas in the Champions League. With Ferguson’s men having qualified for the knock out stages, it was a good opportunity to give some of the younger stars and bench warmers a run out.

Nevertheless, a first half Rodrigo Tello deflected goal against the run of play condemned United to a 1-0 defeat ending their 23 game home european unbeaten run.

The goal was harsh on United who dominated the match but the young players such as Federico Macheda, Darren Gibson, Danny Welbeck and Gabriel Obertan lacked the cutting edge in the crucial areas.

The home side nearly equalised in injury time but Wes Brown’s header from a corner was superbly tipped away by veteran Turkish goalkeeper Rustu to leave already qualified United not yet certain of top spot in the group.

Chelsea open gap over injury hit United

A debated 76th winner from Chelsea captain John Terry condemned Manchester United to a 1-0 defeat in a crucial Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge.

The reigning champions were without first choice centre back pairing Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand whilst Dimitar Berbatov was ruled out just before the match. This meant that United lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Wayne Rooney up front by himself.

A first half of few chances was highlighted more towards the decisions that United failed to receive. Wayne Rooney was wrongly ruled offside before John Terry seemed to foul Antonio Valencia in the penalty area.

Nicolas Anelka had the best chance of the first half with a curling shot that brought the best out of Edwin Van der Sar with a left handed save. However, the two sides went into half time with the scores level.

Van der Sar focused on fitness

The second half began in similar fashion with both teams cancelling eachother out. The returning Darren Fletcher seemed to be in irresistable form and his fierce drive from outside the box was brilliantly blocked by Ricardo Carvalho.

Wayne Rooney then had two good opportunities to put his side ahead. Firstly, his low drive skidded inches past Petr Cech’s far post before the striker’s curling effort was well saved by the Chelsea goalkeeper.

Nevertheless, Frank Lampard’s controversial free kick found Terry who headed past the despairing Van der Sar. The talking points arrised from the fact that United were incensed by the awarding of the free kick after Darren Fletcher claimed he had won the ball. It then appeared that Didier Drogba was in an offside position after sticking out a leg towards the ball following Terry’s header.

A small late rally went without reward and Sir Alex Ferguson had to contemplate the fact that his team were five points behind leaders Chelsea with Arsenal threatening to move into second place. Still, the title race is never decided in November!

Injury hit United march on

An depleted Manchester United team sealed qualification to the Champions League and another three points in the Premier League.

A Saturday evening clash against Blackburn saw the team looking bounce back from a disappointing 2-0 defeat at arch rivals Liverpool. However, the opening half hour saw United struggle to break down the hard working opposition led by manager Sam Allardyce.

It took until nine minutes into the second half for the deadline to be broken. A weak cross shot from Patrice Evra saw Dimitar Berbatov flick the ball up before striking a sublime volley back to goal past Paul Robinson. United had chances to add to their total but were largely wasteful in front of goal.

Nevertheless, a drilled cross from Anderson saw Wayne Rooney flick a fantastic left foot volley into the far corner for a 2-0 lead in the87th minute. Blackburn could have had a consolation goal but Nikola Kalinic’s effort, which proved to be onside, was wrongly ruled out.

The points moved United to within two points of leaders Chelsea as the title race begins to heat up.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men also managed to secure their place in the Champions League knock out stages with a memorable comeback at home to CSKA Moscow.

Three first half goals from the Russians saw them hold a 3-1 lead at half time with Michael Owen’s close range drive being the only success for United. However, the introduction of Wayne Rooney from the bench sparked the team into life and they began to test goalkeeper Akinfeev on a more regular basis.

With six minutes to go, Paul Scholes headed in from a Gary Neville free kick before Antonio Valencia’s long range shot deflected off the Moscow defender to earn a superb point which sees them qualify with two games to go.

United lack spark as Liverpool overrun rivals

A disappointing display from reigning Premier League champions Manchester United contributed to a 2-0 victory for a resurgent Liverpool side.

A trademark world class solo goal in the 65th minute from Fernando Torres was the catalyst for the victory which also saw Nemanja Vidic sent off for the third time in a row against Liverpool with minutes to go.

Sir Alex Ferguson

The visitors looked fairly lacklustre in the early stages and it was thanks to the returning Edwin Van Der Sar that they stayed level in the first half after the goalkeeper clawed Fabio Aureillo’s free kick out from under his bar. The Dutchman then got up to stop Dirk Kuyt’s rebound as Liverpool pushed for the opener.

The hosts cut United open on several other occasions but Dirk Kuyt in particular made the wrong decision on several occasions when in good positions.

As the second half wore on, it looked as if the first goal may well settle the match. In the 65th minute, a fantastic through ball from Benayoun saw Torres outmuscle Rio Ferdinand before striking past Van der Sar into the roof of the net for the opener.

United tried to respond but found their forward thinking players not quite on their game. Their best chance came just minutes from the end as substitute Michael Owen set up Antonio Valencia who rattled the bar from a tight angle.

Unfortunately, the woe wasn’t over for Ferguson’s men as Nemanja Vidic saw red for the third time in a row against Liverpool. Interestingly just moments later, Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano joined the Serbian in the dressing room after a late tackle on Van der Sar.

Even so, the last word still went to Benitez as a counter attack saw David N’Gog put through on goal and the French striker calmly finished to wrap the game up.

Whether or not the result puts Liverpool back in the title race remains to be seen. What is certain is that despite the defeat, United are still very much in the reckoning and they normally tend to bounce back well from defeat.

Just a couple of nights later, United beat Barnsley 2-0 in the Carling Cup to progress through to the quarter finals. Nevertheless, the result won’t have eased the pain that they felt at Anfield due to the majority of the starting line up being different from Sunday’s game.

Still, goals from Danny Welbeck and Michael Owen saw the team ease to a comfortable away victory. The only disappointing sidenote was another red card, this time awarded to Gary Neville for a poor challenge midway through the second half.

Injury hit United grind out key victories

A below strength Manchester United side scraped a crucial 1-0 victory away to CSKA Moscow to leave themselves on the brink of qualification for the Champions League knockout stage.

The game, played on artificial grass, never really kicked into life although United were comfortably the better side throughout.

Antonio Valencia (right) earns Man Utd a win by powering in a shot late on against CSKA Moscow

Gary Neville’s left footed curling shot came the closest to opening the scoring in the first half which in itself showed how few clear cut opportunities there were.

United pushed for the winner in the second half with Michael Owen missing the target before Antonio Valencia struck the bar. However, Valencia made no mistake in the 85th minute with a clever angled shot past the goalkeeper.

Travelling to Moscow during the winter months is never a memorable experience and United will be glad to have escaped with all three points and qualification all but secured.

The story was fairly similar just days earlier during the Premier League champions 2-1 victory at home to Bolton.

Despite an own goal from Zat Knight and Antonio Valencia notching his first goal for the club, United seemed to switch off at times allowing Bolton back into the game. The visitors will claim that they were unlucky not to have snatched a point after laying siege to the United goal in the final minutes of the match.

However, when the 38 matches have been played and the champions for 2009/10 are crowned, it may just be them unconvincing three points against Bolton which seperates United from the rest of the pack.
